Apply for Ohio EBT Benefits

Everything you need to know to start your application.

Steps to Apply for SNAP in Ohio

If you live in Ohio and need help buying groceries, you may qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps. SNAP benefits are loaded onto an EBT card, which works like a debit card at grocery stores and farmers markets. This guide explains how to apply for SNAP in Ohio, what documents you’ll need, and how to check the status of your application online or in person.

1. Apply Online via Ohio Benefits

You can apply online through the official Ohio Benefits Self Service Portal. Use your OHID account to log in, submit the SNAP application, upload documents, and manage your case. For additional guidance, see the ODJFS “How To Apply for Food Assistance” page.

2. Apply by Paper, Mail, or In Person

If you prefer, you can fill out a paper application and submit it to your local County Job & Family Services office.

  • Download the “Application for Cash, Food, or Medical Assistance” form (used for SNAP) — OH JFS Application PDF.
  • Submit the completed form in person or by mail to your local CDJFS office.
  • Find your county’s Job & Family Services office using the Ohio JFS County Directory.

3. What Happens After You Apply

After your application is received, your county CDJFS will review it and schedule an interview, either by phone or in person. In many cases, decisions are made within 30 days; expedited benefits may be available in urgent cases. If approved, your benefits will be loaded onto your Ohio Direction Card (EBT), which you can use at participating retailers.

SNAP Eligibility Basics

SNAP eligibility depends on your household income, expenses, and family size. Most working families with limited income, seniors, and individuals with disabilities may qualify for benefits. Your state’s SNAP office will review your application and determine your benefit amount.
